Typical SEO costs in New Zealand in 2026
SEO in NZ is usually sold one of three ways: a monthly retainer, a one-off project such as an audit or a site clean-up, or by the hour. The ranges below come from prices New Zealand agencies publish on their own websites, so treat them as a guide to compare quotes against rather than a fixed market rate.
Free SEO audit
Often free Many agencies offer a free first look at your site. Useful for spotting obvious problems, but it is a sales tool, not a full plan.Entry-level SEO package
From about $1,000 a month Usually a smaller site serving one area or a handful of services. One Auckland agency lists its small business package at $960 + GST a month, with larger packages at $1,460 and from $2,460 + GST a month.Small business SEO retainer
$1,500 to $2,500 a month Several services or areas, regular content and work to earn genuine links and mentions.Medium business SEO retainer
$1,800 to $6,000 a month Larger sites, competitive industries, small online stores or several regions.Large, national and ecommerce SEO
$2,600 to $10,000+ a month Big product catalogues, national reach and highly competitive searches such as law, finance and health.One-off SEO foundation project
$3,500 to $10,000+ Fixing technical problems, restructuring pages and setting up tracking in one go, without an ongoing retainer.Freelance SEO consultant in NZ
$75 to $200+ an hour Good for advice or a specific fix when you or your web developer can do the hands-on work.Always check whether a quote includes GST: some published prices do and some do not. What drives the cost of SEO in NZ
Two businesses can get very different SEO quotes for good reasons. The price follows the amount of work needed to compete for the searches that bring you customers.
Competition in your industry
A plumber in Pukekohe faces fewer serious competitors than a lawyer targeting all of Auckland. The tougher the search results, the more content and authority it takes.Areas and services you target
One service in one suburb is a small job. Ten services across New Zealand means many more pages to plan, write and maintain. The state of your website
A slow site, broken pages or pages Google cannot index need fixing first. That work often sits in the first few months.Content volume
Writing useful service pages and articles is usually the largest share of a retainer. One piece a month and four pieces a month are very different budgets.Who implements the changes
If the agency makes the changes on your site, it costs more than a report you hand to your own developer, but things actually get done. What a good SEO package includes
Whatever you pay, you should be able to see what was done each month and why. A sound SEO package in New Zealand usually covers:
- An audit and a written plan before the monthly work starts, so priorities are agreed
- Technical fixes: indexing, page speed, mobile use, site structure and internal links
- On-page work: clear titles, headings and a useful page for each important service
- Google Business Profile and consistent business details if you serve local customers
- New content written with your knowledge, not generic filler
- Links and mentions earned through legitimate work such as local organisations, suppliers and industry sites
- Monthly reporting on search visibility, organic visits and enquiries, not just rankings
- Your ownership of the website, content, Google accounts and data
SEO red flags for NZ businesses
Guaranteed rankings
Google's own guidance says no one can guarantee a number one ranking. Anyone promising page one, a set number of leads or a date is promising something they do not control.Cheap link packages
An offer like "500 backlinks for $99" breaks Google's spam policies, which name buying links for ranking purposes as link spam. At best it does nothing; at worst it hurts your site.Secret methods
If an agency will not explain what it will do on your site, or claims a special relationship with Google, be wary. Google's own guidance warns about exactly this claim.Very low monthly prices
A retainer of a few hundred dollars a month buys very little skilled time. Ask exactly what work is done each month.Accounts you do not own
Your Google Business Profile, Search Console, analytics and content should be in your name, so you can leave without losing them.Sources: Google Search Central, Do you need an SEO?; Google Search spam policies.
SEO contract terms and minimum periods in NZ
Contract terms vary. Some New Zealand agencies run month to month with no lock-in; others ask for a minimum period up front. A short minimum is reasonable because the first months are mostly fixing and building, and results from content and authority take longer to show. A long lock-in with no clear plan of work is not.
Before you sign, ask how long the minimum term is, how much notice you need to give, what happens to the content and accounts if you leave, and what will be done in the first three months.
For realistic timeframes, read our guide on how long SEO takes.

SEO cost questions for NZ businesses
- How much does SEO cost per month in NZ?
- Published New Zealand agency prices put most small business SEO retainers between about $1,000 and $2,500 a month, with larger and more competitive sites paying several thousand a month. Our packages start at $999 + GST a month.
- How much does local SEO cost in NZ?
- Local SEO for one location is usually covered by an agency's entry-level package, and published New Zealand entry packages start at about $1,000 a month. Our Starter SEO covers one location for $999 + GST a month. If you only need your Google Business Profile set up properly, a one-off job can cost less. Read more on local SEO.
- Is a one-off SEO audit worth it?
- Yes, if you act on it. An audit shows what is stopping your site being found and what to fix first. It is most useful before you commit to a retainer or rebuild a website. Start with our free website audit.
- Can I do SEO myself instead of paying an agency?
- Often, for the basics: a complete Google Business Profile, clear service pages and asking customers for reviews. Paying for SEO makes sense when the competition is tough or you do not have the time to keep at it.
- Why do SEO agencies ask for a minimum term?
- The first months are spent fixing and building, and the effect of content and links takes time to show. A short minimum is normal. Ask what is done in that period, and see how long SEO takes.
- Should I spend on SEO or Google Ads?
- Google Ads brings traffic as soon as you pay for clicks and stops when you stop. SEO builds visibility that keeps working but takes longer. Many New Zealand businesses use both. See our Google Ads management page.
