Hosting, maintenance and care plans: the difference
Hosting keeps a website online. Maintenance keeps it safe and working. A care plan adds the changes and improvements that keep it useful to your customers.
Website hosting
The server your site lives on, the SSL certificate that gives it a secure https address, and monitoring that tells someone when it goes down. Without hosting, there is no website.Website maintenance
Security updates and backups. Software behind a website needs regular updates, and a recent backup is what lets a broken or compromised site be restored. Our Host plan includes both.Website care plan
Hosting and maintenance, plus time each month for edits: new prices, staff, photos or services. Care adds a monthly health and speed check. Growth Care adds more edit time, a new page or section each quarter and ongoing work to turn more visitors into enquiries.Which hosting and care plan suits your business
Host for stable websites
Suits a site that rarely changes, or a team that makes its own edits. You get the technical side handled without paying for edit time you will not use.Care for regular small updates
Suits a business that changes a few details most months and would rather send an email than log in. The monthly health and speed check is there to catch problems early.Growth Care for websites that drive leads
Suits a business where the website is a main source of work, often alongside Google Ads or SEO. The extra hours, a new page or section each quarter and conversion work keep the site improving rather than standing still.Who owns your .nz domain and website
A .nz domain belongs to its domain name holder: the person or organisation named on the .nz register. Whoever builds or hosts your website, check that the holder is your business and not your web provider, and keep the login for your domain registrar somewhere your team can find it.
Your website is separate from your domain. Before you sign up for any hosting or care plan, ask who owns the site files, the content and the images, and how you would move the site if you left. A clear answer in writing avoids a hard conversation later.
- Who is named as the holder of the domain?
- Who owns the website files, words and photos?
- How often are backups taken, and how is a site restored?
- What does an edit cost outside the plan?

What NZ businesses pay for website maintenance
One New Zealand agency's 2026 guide puts monthly maintenance for small business brochure sites at about $50 to $200 a month, and $200 to $800 for medium business or organisation sites, with e-commerce sites, portals and web apps costing more. The guide does not say whether those figures include GST. They are general ranges, and what each provider includes varies a lot, so compare what is covered, not just the price.

NZ website hosting and maintenance questions
- How much does website hosting and maintenance cost in NZ?

- What is the difference between website hosting and a care plan?
- Hosting keeps the site online and secure. A care plan includes hosting and adds time for edits and regular checks. Our Host plan is hosting with security updates and daily backups; Care and Growth Care add edits and improvements.
- Do I need a care plan if my website rarely changes?
- Probably not. Host covers hosting, SSL, daily backups, security updates and uptime monitoring, which is what a stable site needs. Care makes sense once you want regular edits done for you.
- What counts as an edit?
- Care includes up to an hour of edits a month and Growth Care up to three hours. Examples are changes to existing text, prices, photos, team members or opening hours.
- Who should own my .nz domain name?
- Your business. The domain name holder is whoever is named on the .nz register, and you can check that with the Domain Name Commission lookup.
- Is it time to rebuild rather than maintain my website?
- If the site is slow, hard to edit or no longer brings in enquiries, maintenance only goes so far. Our website redesign checklist helps you decide, and our web design page lists the build options.
