How Google Ads pricing works in New Zealand

You never pay Google a set price. You pay per click, and the price of each click is set in an auction every time someone searches.

When someone in Auckland searches "emergency plumber", every advertiser bidding on that search enters an auction. Google ranks the ads using your maximum bid, the quality of your ad and landing page, how competitive the search is, the context of the person searching and a few other factors. You are charged only when someone clicks, and Google says the amount you actually pay is often less than your maximum bid.

Quality matters as much as money. Google states that higher quality ads can often lead to lower costs per click, which is why a relevant ad pointing at a page that matches the search can beat a bigger budget sending people to a generic home page.

You control the total with a daily budget. On a busy day Google can spend up to twice your average daily budget, but over a month you are never charged more than 30.4 times that daily amount. Set $33 a day and your monthly ad spend will not go past about $1,000.

Google Ads cost per click in NZ by industry

Google does not publish New Zealand click prices, so the only public figures come from NZ agencies that publish their own planning estimates. They agree on the shape: hospitality and online retail clicks are cheap, trades and health sit in the middle, and legal and finance are the most expensive.

01

Online stores

About $0.80 to $3.50 a click Shopping and product searches, where lower prices are balanced by smaller order values.
02

Beauty and wellness

About $1.20 to $4.00 a click Salons, spas and clinics competing mostly with nearby businesses.
03

Trades and cleaning

About $2.50 to $8.00 a click Plumbers, electricians, builders and cleaners, where one job can be worth hundreds or thousands.
04

Dental and healthcare

About $4 to $12 a click High-value patients and a lot of competing clinics in the main centres.
05

Legal and finance

About $6 to $22 a click, sometimes more Among the most contested searches in New Zealand. One NZ agency reports some finance and insurance clicks reaching $50.

These are published estimates, not Google data, and your real price depends on your keywords, location and ad quality. One NZ agency estimates Auckland campaigns cost roughly 25% more than the national average because more businesses compete there. The Keyword Planner inside your own Google Ads account gives local estimates for your exact searches. A sensible Google Ads budget for an NZ business

Work backwards from clicks. Your budget needs to buy enough clicks each month for some of them to become enquiries.

Here is the arithmetic. If clicks in your industry cost around $5, a $1,000 monthly budget buys about 200 clicks. If 5 in every 100 of those people enquire, that is roughly 10 enquiries a month. If clicks cost $15, the same budget buys about 65 clicks and perhaps three enquiries, which is rarely enough for Google, or you, to learn what works. Your own click price and enquiry rate will differ, but the method holds.

Published NZ planning guides suggest starting test budgets of around $400 to $900 a month for beauty and wellness, $600 to $1,200 for local trades, and $1,500 to $3,000 for legal, finance and professional services. We set our minimum at $1,000 a month in ad spend because below that most service businesses do not get enough clicks to judge a campaign fairly.

Google Ads management fees in NZ

If an agency or freelancer runs your account, you pay them on top of your ad spend. New Zealand agencies charge in one of two ways.

01

Percentage of ad spend

Typically 15% to 25% of spend Usually with a monthly minimum. The fee rises every time you raise your budget, whether or not the work does.
02

Flat monthly fee

About $280 to $1,500 a month Published entry prices for small accounts start around $280 to $450 a month. Larger budgets and more campaigns cost more to manage properly.
03

Setup fee

Included, or from about $500 one-off Some agencies fold setup into the monthly fee, others charge it once. Check whether it includes conversion tracking and a landing page.

A cheap fee is only a saving if the account is actually looked after. Ask how often someone reviews the search terms you are paying for, who owns the Google Ads account, and whether the report shows enquiries and sales or only clicks and impressions.

Google Ads cost questions

How much does Google Ads cost per month in NZ?
Published NZ starter budgets range from about $400 to $3,000 a month in ad spend, depending on the industry, plus any management fee. You set the budget, and Google will not charge more than 30.4 times your average daily budget in a month.
Is there a minimum spend for Google Ads?
Google has no minimum. Agencies often do: ours is $1,000 a month in ad spend, because smaller budgets rarely buy enough clicks to show what works.
Why are Google Ads clicks so expensive in my industry?
Click prices are set by auction, so they rise when many businesses chase the same customers and when each customer is worth a lot. Legal, finance and health clicks cost more for that reason. Better ads and landing pages can bring your cost per click down.
Is a flat fee or a percentage better for Google Ads management?
A flat fee keeps the manager's pay separate from how much you spend, so there is no reason to push your budget up. A percentage can suit very large accounts. Either way, judge the fee against the enquiries the account brings in. See our Google Ads management page for how we charge.
Do I pay GST on Google Ads in New Zealand?
Yes. Google New Zealand Limited adds 15% GST to Google Ads invoices. If your business is GST-registered, you can usually claim it back in your GST return.
Is Google Ads cheaper than SEO?
Not necessarily. Ads cost money for every click but can bring enquiries within days; SEO costs a monthly fee and takes months but the traffic is not paid per click. Our Google Ads vs SEO guide compares the two.
