Google Ads vs SEO.

Google Ads buys a place on Google today and stops when you stop paying. SEO earns free results more slowly and keeps paying back. Most NZ businesses really need to choose which comes first.

Google Ads vs SEO in NZ: the short answer

Choose Google Ads when you need enquiries soon and can measure what each one is worth. Choose SEO when you can wait months and want traffic you do not pay for per click. Many businesses start with ads and build SEO underneath.

Both put your business in front of people searching Google for what you do, in the same results page. Google Ads places paid, labelled ads at the top and bottom of that page. Search engine optimisation (SEO) improves your website and your Google Business Profile so you appear in the unpaid results and on Google Maps. Google states that it never accepts money to include or rank sites in its search results, so the two are separate: spending on ads does not lift your free rankings, and good SEO does not lower your ad costs directly.

Neither is guaranteed. Ads depend on an auction against other advertisers, and organic results depend on how Google judges your pages against everyone else's. What follows is how they differ in practice for a New Zealand small business, and how to decide.

How Google Ads and SEO compare

01

Speed: how soon Google Ads and SEO bring enquiries

Google Ads can show your business within days of the account and tracking being set up. SEO usually takes months: Google has to crawl the changes, and content and reputation build gradually. How long depends on your site, your competition and the work done, so be wary of anyone promising a date.
02

Cost: paying per click vs paying for SEO work

With Google Ads you pay Google for each click, at a price set by auction, plus whoever manages the account. Google sets no minimum spend. With SEO you pay for the work (usually a monthly fee or a project), and the clicks themselves are free. See our Google Ads cost guide and SEO cost guide for NZ numbers.
03

How long Google Ads and SEO results last

Ads stop the moment the budget stops. SEO work tends to keep working after it is done: a well-built service page or a strong Business Profile can bring enquiries for years, although rankings can drop if competitors do better work or Google changes how it ranks pages.
04

Control and testing in Google Ads and SEO

Ads give close control: which searches, which suburbs, which hours, and what the ad says. That makes them a quick way to test an offer or a new service. SEO gives less direct control because Google decides what ranks, but it covers the wider spread of questions people ask before they buy.
05

Where Google Ads and SEO appear on Google

Ads appear in labelled sponsored positions. SEO covers the organic results, the local map results and, increasingly, the pages that AI answers in Google draw on. Some searchers skip ads; others click them happily. Being in both places on the same search is common for businesses that run both.

Google Ads or SEO: which suits your NZ business

01

New businesses

A new website has no search history, so SEO starts from zero. Google Ads can bring early enquiries and show which services and suburbs actually convert. Set up your Business Profile and a sound site from day one so SEO has a base to grow from.
02

Seasonal businesses

Heat pumps before winter, landscaping in spring, tax help in March. Ads can be switched up for the busy weeks and down for the quiet ones. SEO for seasonal pages needs to be done well before the season, because rankings do not arrive on demand.
03

Competitive trades and services

Plumbers, electricians, lawyers and builders in Auckland compete with many others for the same searches, which pushes up click prices. Ads still work when a job is worth enough, but the cost of every lead adds up, and that is where SEO earns its keep over time.
04

Local service businesses

For searches like "physio Ponsonby" or "electrician near me", the map results often matter most. They are driven by your Google Business Profile and local SEO, not by ad spend. Our local SEO page covers that work.
05

Products people do not search for yet

If nobody searches for your product, neither Google Ads nor SEO has much to work with. Meta ads, which reach people by interest rather than by what they search, are often a better way to build that demand.

Why many NZ businesses run Google Ads and SEO together

The two cover each other's gaps. Ads bring enquiries while SEO builds, and SEO gradually lowers how much of your work depends on paid clicks. Once organic results bring steady enquiries for your core services, ad budget can move to the most valuable searches, new services or the busy season.

They also share what they learn. Search term reports from Google Ads show the exact words people use and which ones become enquiries, which tells you which pages to build for SEO. Both depend on the same thing in the end: a fast, clear website page that answers the search and makes it easy to get in touch. A weak landing page wastes ad spend and holds back rankings.

Running both is not compulsory. If cash is tight, it is usually better to do one properly than both thinly, with conversion tracking in place so you can see what each dollar brings.

Where Google Business Profile fits in Google Ads and SEO

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the local map results. It is free to create, and Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, so a complete profile, accurate categories and services, regular photos and genuine reviews are part of SEO, not advertising.

The profile also helps ads. It can be linked to Google Ads so your address can show with your ads, and the reviews people read on it influence whether they call you, whichever result they clicked. For most local businesses it is the first thing to get right, before spending on either.

Google Ads vs SEO questions for NZ businesses

Is SEO better than Google Ads?
Neither is better in general. Google Ads is faster and stops when you stop paying; SEO is slower but keeps working. The right choice depends on how soon you need enquiries, your budget and how competitive your searches are in New Zealand. Read more on Google Ads and SEO.
Does paying for Google Ads improve my organic ranking?
No. Google states that it never accepts money to include or rank sites in its search results. Ads and organic rankings are separate, although ad data can show which searches are worth building pages for.
How long does SEO take compared with Google Ads?
Ads can run within days once tracking and campaigns are set up. SEO usually takes months to show clear movement, and how long depends on your starting point, competition and the work done. Nobody can honestly promise a date. Our guide to how long SEO takes explains what affects it.
Can a small NZ business afford both?
Some can, some should pick one first. Our Google Ads management starts at $1,000 + GST a month plus at least $1,000 a month in ad spend, and our SEO packages start at $999 + GST a month. The Google Ads cost guide and SEO cost guide help you budget.
What should a local business do first?
Set up and complete your Google Business Profile, because it is free and drives the map results. Then make sure your website has a clear page for each main service before spending on ads or ongoing SEO. Our Google Business Profile guide covers the setup.
